Scientific Inquiry & Application Practices (ELL)
Practice science action words and matter/chemistry vocabulary with ELL-friendly definitions. Actions: observe, measure, infer, justify. Matter: pH, indicators, atoms, conservation of mass.
Standards
- MS-PS1-2 — Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.
- MS-PS1-5 — Develop and use a model to describe how the total number of atoms does not change in a chemical reaction and thus mass is conserved.
The science-action vocabulary (observe, infer, justify) supports the NGSS Science & Engineering Practices that run through every performance expectation, rather than one specific code.
NGSS = Next Generation Science Standards. This vocabulary is also written to support WIDA's Standard 4 (Science) English Language Development standard.
