Back to Atmosphere (ELL)

Order the Atmosphere

Put the main atmosphere layers in order from the ground to outer space.

Beginner ELL Core Idea

  • Air surrounds Earth and changes.
  • Air pushes and moves.
  • Heat makes air rise. Cool air falls.
  • Weather happens in the troposphere.

Arrange the layers

Start at the ground (troposphere) and move up to the edge of space (exosphere). Hint: pauses mark the tops of layers.

Reading

Weather happens in the troposphere, the lowest layer. The tropopause is its top. Above it is the stratosphere, then the stratopause. Next is the mesosphere and the mesopause. Higher is the very hot thermosphere. The exosphere is the outer edge that fades into space.

Tip: Layer → pause (top) → next layer.
